Blessed with Looks

Composed 11/27/13
Description: I wrote this for wdbwp’s poetry prompt: “Giving Thanks No. 2,” in which we were to write about negative things we were thankful for. Here’s mine. It seems befitting enough that I should post it now, since it’s officially Thanksgiving!

I am thankful
For the plain
Emptiness of my features
The vast, doughy roundness
Of my flushed cheeks
For thickened eyebrows
And spotted complexion

How I rejoice
In a slow metabolism
And a fondness for sweets
Resulting in a swelling bulge
Falling under a broad ribcage

For without it
Who could stand my presence?
My pride
In every moment
Would blind
Repel the good and
Attract the leeches
Looking for a place to feed

I would neglect
The sweet parts of me
I would not care
For how far I could go
With a fair face
And a fair frame

Kindness, warmth, integrity
Humor, IQ, honesty
Are all unneeded for beauty

But for me
They are essential
So for plainness
I am thankful

Positive Poles

Composed 11/22/13
Description: n/a

You’re repelled
Because you see
Confidence, intelligence
A longing to be touched
Silly jokes and too-wide grins
In me

And despite your arrogance
You do not crave your own love
It scares you
That you might lose a battle
That you may discover your flaws in me

You might succumb
To the razor of my tongue
Leaving yours shredded
And your identity no more
You might be found lost
In my heart that has no holes
You have no place
To hide

No
You want to marvel at your own traits
You need
One buried in uncertainty and
Craving your wisdom
One who delights in attention
But needs it not
So it fails to be
Tempting
Revealing

You desire
A sweet balance to
Occasional instability
Lest you be faced with your own
Exaggerated tendencies
While
With me you’d find
That you are inside
What I so clearly display

So you’re repelled
Scared to lose a battle
Scared to see your flaws
And there’s no fighting that
When we’re both positive poles

Pinpricks

Composed 11/16/13
Description: n/a

A single pinprick I can withstand
But when you’re around me
I am stabbed in threes
Every moment
I seize under
Small, sharp punctures
Which
In their mass
Summon the blood beneath
And bring it out
Drop by drop
Forming into streams
Shining red and vibrant
On my paling skin

And I wither
Unable to lash out
Because pinpricks seem so
Insignificant

Tactile Hallucinations

Composed 11/14/13
Description: I blame this title on the abnormal psychology quiz I’m studying for. Fun fact: these types of hallucinations are most common in situations of withdrawal.

I miss the things
That never were
The brush and touch
Of which I’m unsure
My fingertips
Untouched
Still burn
My heart, unbidden,
Won’t cease to yearn
My unfilled arms
And cold pale skin
Miss the solid
That was never him
His soft sweet pecks
That never pressed
I’ve tried to forget
But I’m obsessed

Exciting News!

This evening I received an email letting me know that three of my poems were accepted into my university’s literary arts magazine!

Considering I was extremely nervous about submitting my poetry, this makes me pretty ecstatic!  It’s essentially the first official “pat on the back” I’ve gotten specifically for my poetry. And with how crazy school has been lately, I needed this bit of encouragement.

I must say, I have to thank my blog and my followers for this triumph.  It was starting this blog that encouraged me to get into poetry, and the resources, prompts, and likes and comments I’ve received from the blogging community have greatly increased the amount of writing I do. So thank you all for contributing to my growth as a writer! Without this blog encouraging me to continue writing, I doubt I would have had anything to submit and/or the motivation and confidence to write and submit something, especially a poem.

By now I am sure many of you are on the edge of your seat with suspense. What fantastic poems were selected?

The lucky winners are: A Brief Romantic History, Flowers, and How Love Grows.

As you might guess from reading these poems, the topic of this magazine was “Growth.”

Wow, as a total coincidence, this is also my 100th post!

No Time

Composed 10/4/13
Description: A little bit of my life lately.

I roll my eyes at the angsty side
Do you know how much I have to do?
Two hours filled just talking ‘bout stuff
And time from the day for texting too!

Don’t you know little longing heart
My mind is too full for your swift tricks?
Even if I do manage heart strings’ pull
I don’t have the time! I can’t commit!

Papers, projects due in three weeks
All my weekends consumed
I daresay if you fell for me
I don’t know what I’d do

I have no time to write loving notes
Or spend hours sitting at the park
You’d ditch me a few weeks in, I’d bet
Even I’d had your heart

So for now I’ll bury myself
In the workload that surrounds
Maybe I’ll have time to love
When this madness calms down

Unrequited

Composed 11/5/13
Description: Sorry for the long hiatus! School’s been killing me. But life has a way of smacking you with muse now and again.

I have accepted
The clouds that obscure
Any chance of sunlight
But I still bask in want
In the rays that pass through

Indeed I melt
Merely sensing your presence through the clouds
Long streams of warmth
Run and bubble under my fingertips
And the heat ebbs and flows
Across my neck and ear

How my knees tremble
At the smoky atmosphere that could be
If only I could stroke your face
Without getting burned

But I cannot help it
I still love
What is irrevocably refused
