And I think
That could have been me
If I tried
But I didn’t

It’s too late now
Or did it even matter?
I don’t care
But was that first
Or a shield
To guard my pride?

This is great, especially that last stanza. I’ve never read a poem that’s dug into a moment of self awareness and made sense of it so clearly. You should have heard me clap when I finished reading it.
