Small Mercy

Composed 7/17/15
Description: n/a

We looked out the window and laughed
At the storm
As rain poured down and umbrellas bobbed desperately
We stayed dry
But this was small mercy
The last time we would laugh
At the world
Before the world
Overtook us

Hard Lessons

Composed 7/14/15
Description: For today’s Daily Prompt: Well, I Never… In which we are describe something we’ve done that we would advise a friend never to do. This is the first thing I thought of. I hope you heed my sage advice.

Life has taught me much, dear friend
In the mere years I’ve been here
I took my trade in people
And I’ve fought some paralyzing fears
I’ve known sickness
I’ve known health
I’ve strolled the streets near poverty
And brushed the bushes of some wealth
Admirations I’ve known
And hated I’ve been
Often a good girl
I’ve danced with sin
In the shadows I’ve hid
On the stage I have sung
I have made some good laughs
And hung with my tongue
My life thus far has been a wise mix
Though the best lesson learned I learned at six
While fun those little petting zoos
Don’t stand behind donkeys in an angel costume

The Only Thrill

Composed 7/11/15
Description: n/a

He tore by in yellow streaks of flame
The Gs pulling hard like a hurricane
In the wind he hears his fans calling his name
The price and prize of luck, money, and fame

Life is fast
When your life is rich
When you cruise on by
And your fingers loose the twitch
You want it
You will it
That need to survive
Cause life is too easy
And the price isn’t high

When you take turns at seventy five
Your heart beats to live or it beats to die
You hope your truth grips and your lies slide by
Cause if you fly into the street you won’t make it alive

And that’s the truth
When you have it all
The only thrill
Is the chance to fall

Guardians

Composed 7/10/15
Description: Written in the dark hours of the morning.

One cat slept at the door
The other at her feet
How sweet she thought
Their gesture
Loyalty unending
What she didn’t see
When she closed her eyes
And drifted off to sleep
Was the warning glare
In their green orb stare
At the smoke man who appeared
And fled
No words more

Floods

Composed 7/8/15
Description: Inspired by the weather. A more musical poem regarding infatuation.

The summer heat makes my bones weary
There are burns on my arms and gnats in my eyes
Some love the heat and call it home
I long for the comfort of a misty day
It breaks the hours of sun and the same

You say your love will rain on down
You’ll roar each day with the downpour sound
But you can’t have rain without the clouds
And without the sun we’ll flood the town

With all that rain I’m sure to drown

I loathe revealing all my skin
It’s fresh and pale, vulnerable to scorch
Some make it a habit and call it beauty
I long for the comfort of a cover’s squeeze
On a cool day, just a bit of heat

You say your love will rain on down
You’ll roar each day with the downpour sound
But you can’t have rain without the clouds
And without the sun we’ll flood the town

With all that rain I’m sure to drown

Sun nor rain can nurture alone
It’s a balance just as all nature is
Some call drowning a pleasant demise
In drought I’d curl up and blow away
Either way the outcome is the same

Don’t you see the vital flaw?
What’s loved must not be the only gift
A rainy day needs a bit of sun
That’s the beauty
That’s where rainbows come from

You say your love will rain on down
You’ll roar each day with the downpour sound
But you can’t have rain without the clouds
And without the sun we’ll flood the town

With all that rain I’m sure to drown

Debris

Composed 7/4/15
Description: Inspired by fireworks and the holiday.

We are light
We rise into the sky
And ride on trails of smoke
Bursting in dazzling hues
We dance
Spin and curl and fall
Down
Down
Into peaceful, happy sleep

By and by

We are burdened
Rooted to the ground
Tossing, turning as forced spectators
While the world around us burns
We wish to watch, to revel
But reality redirects joyous reminisce
We say our dear God Bless
Our love poisoned by danger
We sense those things amiss
