Variety

Composed 9/15/17
Description: A little tidbit of advice, inspired by life and today’s Daily Prompt: Flavorful.

Tastebuds changed
Were planted
After careful cultivation
Grown over years
Budded and
Bloomed
Tended to
Never harvested
Rarely pruned
Run amok
Vines sprouting, crawling, overtaking
Setting more to root
More seeds, more buds, more blooms
Suddenly no room for anything else

And then the rot comes in

Disease, nausea, death
Then there’s nothing left
No moving on
Just spending the rest of days
Searching for a shadow, an exact replica

Only disappointment waits if
This searching becomes fate
And when it’s found
The taste courses through and triggers
Shivering memories of sickness
And it only heaves and never leaves
If one only consumes the same that instigated illness
So be through with it
There are more flavors out in the world
That’s why they call variety
The spice of life

The Curse of Old Loves

Composed 9/10/17
Description: Inspired by life and today’s Daily Prompt: Peculiar. A poem about moving on.

Peculiar
How we cling to the familiar
Even when we know it’s no good
He returns to old comfort
Though he knows it has failed
Venom seeping through the fingertips and lips
And clogging all paths to the heart
But he is welcomed
With a smile and soft eyes
With warmth
With kind words and old love songs
With good intentions, perhaps
But it’s a curse –
He’s poisoned but pleased
Pleasure brings him back and habits form
The longer it endures the more he is addicted and
The more harmed
The more he is unable to break free but
He can anticipate and follow routine
It’s easy
It’s hard to change, move on
Try something new
But if you keep returning to the past
You miss out on what’s in front of you
And the future never comes

Vertigo

Composed 4/20/15
Description: Happy 420! Here’s a little tortured romance for you.

When I breathe you in I feel no pain
My muscles melt inside my skin
Intoxicated, I float through days
Longing for your heavy musk
Your effect binds and
Fills every corner of me spilling
Out my pores like perfume
And I’m starving
The more I see you
The longer I taste
The harder the high is to shake
You’re illicit, you’re poison
And I can’t fight
I’ll drown inside clouds of smoke
I’ll cling, choke until
I’m pried away
Until you toss me away

Allure

Composed 4/25/14
Description: (Day 25 of NaPoWriMo) Busiest. Day. Ever. Test, event planning, event carryout, cleanup… And finally relaxing at Steak & Shake with friends. It was actually this last adventure that inspired today’s poem.

She swipes her fingers
Across glittering jewels it’s
Her new addiction

Dependence

Composed 7/25/13
Description: My response to
We Drink Because We’re Poets’ Thursday Poetry Prompt: Weakness. What is weakness? There are many different kinds of weakness I could write about, but this one spoke to me this evening….

when ice water shoots through my heart
and bugs bite beneath my skin
you tie me up in puppet strings
and stand me on my feet

step

by

step

you lead me through

but the wind whips briskly still
and your strings
twist and tie and trip
and slip off of my wrists and feet and then

step

by

step

I fall

my arms
my legs
they’re frozen now
my heart
my head
their pain throbs new
when I’m forced to walk on my own feet
my strength starts and stops
with you
