A Winding Course

Composed 9/5/17
Description: Inspired by today’s Daily Prompt: Elevate.

Fantasies formed in the mind and acted out viscerally
None that have seen the light of day nor should they
They are silly, preposterous
A sad routine of imagined cliches
There’s no stock to this
Instead reasons to cease and desist
Perhaps why I’ve yearned to quiet my brain
Command it to quit
I detest this sickness, loneliness
How it steals my senses away and
Wastes my time in argument
With my own self when it’s already won —
Logic against hopeful desire
That will eventually be stomped out like flame
I wish I could elevate myself
Above these feelings
Turn off my humanity like a switch
And focus on higher things or at least
Possible things
Because I’m tired of the uphill battles
And I don’t deserve them
I’m worth the pursuit or at least
Expressed, mutual affection
I’m just inpatient with this lazy
Meandering direction
This sorry excuse of a lovers lane

City Block

Composed 9/29/16
Description: It’s been awhile, but the words still jump out at me, especially now that autumn calls!

When cigarette and coffee smoke
Are dancing in the air
When schools of people swarm around
Like you’re not even there
When police patrols and flashing lights
Set hearts a-pounding, scared
When hot asphalt, manicured grass
The cool breeze makes aware
It’s then you pull your jacket tight
Walk like a queen and dare

It’s like something could happen
And even if it never does
You still have now begun the dream
And you still feel it
There
On your skin

Do you listen?

Composed 4/25/16
Description: For Day 23 of NaPoWriMo and for today’s Daily Prompt: Whisper.

Do you listen to the whispers of the world?
They speak to you
when the wind whistles and goosebumps
prickle up and down your skin
when the dark closes in
when you feel the sin of sweet on your lips and
the churning inside that settles like sand
Do you listen?
The world is telling you
that spirits ride just behind you that
evil lurks in your corner
and God hovers in certain places when
the view seems sharper and
you smile just because
Do you listen?
It’s not being subtle
we forget we were born psychic
with good and evil within
they tell us to ignore sensation bare perception
but the whispers of the world are what tell us the truth
So listen
let it guide you

Summer Feels

Composed 8/27/14
Description: It was one of those days that just started right.

Today’s about the joy
Of your favorite pair of shorts
And that t-shirt that feels just right
Well-worn cons tied tight on your feet
Like you could run one hundred miles
And laugh in the lights of a brand new town

It’s about feeling right in your own skin
After trying to slough it off for so long
Silky cool legs in the hot summer sun
Soft feather hair blowing ‘round

About grinnin’ and racing
Letting it all fall away
