Alternative

Composed 8/2/16
Description: n/a

There’s something romantic
About those hard gray songs with
Their open, blunt, and silly words
That play loud on short road trips
That somehow connect to me

I wish I could write you one
And sneak it onto the airways
Lace it with words that would spell your name
As the DJ gave you mine

Feel the guitar riffs through your finger tips
As the bass resets your heart
Let the sound sink in and please you
Let the energy radiate, make you grin
I hope it’s a song you’ll hear again

You’ve been hidden in static speakers
Muffled and compressed
Loving hands hid your complexity and sound
And the radio censored your messages

Now do I listen only because I can?
Have I been bewitched simply by the sound?
Perhaps I’ve fallen into the music and lost my ground
And now I hesitate
This could be my favorite song or perhaps you’re just
An alternative

Untouchable

Composed 5/3/16
Description: So I kinda fell short of my NaPoWriMo goal, but considering this last week was filled with finals and a comic convention that involved many late nights… I still consider 24 out of 30 to be a pretty good record!

Anyway, said comic convention and other news made me think of the following poem, which I guess boils down to this: Have you ever wanted to be friends with a famous person?

Your fame is not why I like you
Nor even the reason for your fame
But rather because when you smile
It’s my smile
And your words make me think and laugh
It’s an innate understanding
That easy conversations would ensue
But you’re untouchable and even then only
Touched with suspicion
It makes me wish that we were born
In another time in place
Maybe then there would be space between us
And we’d fill it with friendship

Man of My Dreams

Composed 6/12/15
Description: n/a

Yours haunt like no other
I seem to always remember
The feeling, so intense, after your dreams
So real, such comfort a common theme
A heart’s sweet trick, a mind’s demise
For a night and some short morning time
You are my grasp, a warm stronghold
I could almost forget the true old cold
Bite of your apathy
Ignorant dichotomy
Of favor with neglect
Reluctance with respect
Such heartache
Each time that I truly wake
The man of my dreams
Is all it seems
You will ever be
To me

Vertigo

Composed 4/20/15
Description: Happy 420! Here’s a little tortured romance for you.

When I breathe you in I feel no pain
My muscles melt inside my skin
Intoxicated, I float through days
Longing for your heavy musk
Your effect binds and
Fills every corner of me spilling
Out my pores like perfume
And I’m starving
The more I see you
The longer I taste
The harder the high is to shake
You’re illicit, you’re poison
And I can’t fight
I’ll drown inside clouds of smoke
I’ll cling, choke until
I’m pried away
Until you toss me away

Just Words

Composed 1/8/15
Description: Hello, world! How’s the new year treating you so far? For me it’s been pretty quiet, though the year is packed with possibilities… One of those possibilities is writing more; I am officially setting the goal of posting one piece a week — so expect more from me!

What’s with me and starting the year with rather unhappy pieces? Maybe it’s just purging myself of the stress of the year… But anyway, something that came to me last night.

I try to pretty my voice with flow’ry metaphors
And catch your attention with clever rhymes
But I can’t hear the music playing
And without that I’m lost

So many people hear songs in life
The mixed up rhythms of day to day
While I’m trapped in words roboticized
Stretched beyond sincerity
Where not everyone can reach

I long for the life of a lyricist
Who can capture a life in a minute or two
And send it out to the masses
Who think themselves the writer

It’s one thing to study the masters
Another to live your life and capture it
Bottle it and send it off
To loved ones and strangers

How can I succeed when others tell my story
Better than I?

And tell it so prettily –
In syllables like waves
Both predictable and unexpected
In their undulating flow

Oh, if only I heard the music
If only you could touch my soul
Would you
Could you
Teach me your music?
I need it to feel whole

In the Shadows

Composed 1/1/14
Description: A rather unhappy start to the new year, I’ll admit, but I can’t deny these thoughts have been on my mind lately – and in reference to many of my friendships.  I will be interested to see if/how things change by next January first.

A merry thought turns quickly sober
When I realize how limited my joy must be
Even frequent, silly communications
Cease abruptly
When another enters and whisks them away
With talk of destiny, of everlasting
And yet I neglect them
As if their future is guaranteed
And my own fate dims and idles
In a horizon without a silhouette
Yet I must blame myself and not the gods
For this solitude is my own choosing
But how much easier it would be to stand behind someone
If I was not always second

Winter

Composed 11/29/11
Description: This is a poem I wrote several years ago; though, it is  one that continues to be relevant to me. I saved posting it until now (for obvious reasons).

It’s not summer when I miss you
When the sun is warm on my skin
And shining
And there’s running
And laughter
And fresh water
Splashing against my face

It’s winter
When snow falls and we bundle up
Eager for warmth
Eager to cling to each other
To sit by the fire
And hold deep conversations
While drinking hot chocolate

That is when I look up
To the sky and wonder
Where you are

It’s winter when I long for
The exhilarating rush of
The frigid wind whipping my cheeks and
Laughter as we crash
Rolling around in the snow

It’s winter
When we are thankful for each other
And eager to please others
To love
And be loved
