Some People

Composed 11/3/16
Description: Inspired by today’s Daily Prompt: Sincere and some of today’s easy conversation.

I like the way love leaps
So easily from your lips
How smiles are the default
As are sweetie and friend
Despite the fact you barely know me
And I sometimes keep a distance
You’ve tasted no unkind words
Just your heart as it flies from your throat
Conversation flows
As inclusive and warm as a central fireplace
That all gather around to feel

Excuse me
If I balk as
I am more choosey with my words of love
I may hesitate to return the sentiment
But not because you aren’t the honest
Dictionary definition picture of the word

Description: Inspired by today’s Daily Prompt: Empty. And if this doesn’t fill you up, another empty-themed poem can be found here.

His smile drew
Each passerby
The twinkling in his eyes
Suggested magic and mystery
Well dressed, well kept
Politeness dripped from his outstretched hands
He was a perfect trap
Until you got inside
Then you realized he’s

You think you’re fire
A hot, alluring force
Unique, endless light
But you’re an explosion
You shock
You burn
You blind
Once they flocked to you but
Your deception is not subtle
So they run
No one wants to burn and die
Is it strange we hide?

Your Story

Composed 7/23/14
Description: n/a

I sit thinking about
The people behind the counter
The boy who brings us burgers
no pickles, no onions
and taco salad
chicken, extra jalapeños
and a traditional smile
and a
I saw you yesterday
At the store
Didn’t say hello

The boy who blends into wallpaper
but hit me like a door

Seems kind
A little funny
“I was buying pants”
He laughed at my dry, offhand remarks
And I was struck, wondered
what he did in his spare time
Gamer? Sport guy?
What does he want out of life?
College plans? Entrepreneur?
Like me, looking for his way?

Makes me wonder what would happen if I said
Hey, what’s your story, kid?

Beauty: Handle with Care

Composed 7/21/14
Description: A little something inspired by some people I know.

They’re charming gems
With the shy milky skin of classic pearls
And eyes sharp as diamonds
Their lips drip fiery rubies and
They clothe themselves in colors
As shocking and varied as all of Earth’s opals

So no one would suppose
That despite this unbending display
Of their great Mother’s confidence
That when these precious stones are touched
They break
