Local Guardians

Composed 4/11/17
Description: For NaPoWriMo.

Gnarled stumps like forest spirits keep sentry
Over golden waves and clusters of scattered brethren
Casting a distant eye toward their homebound caretakers
They ward off demons as solemn duty
In the distance lights cast their ominous glow upon the clouds
Scaring the stars and marring the sunset
A red smog warning to stay away and rooted at their post
Warding off urban dwellers
With their brutal, haunted howls
Unrelenting even in the brightest summer
Ever they remain

Only natives are welcomed here
Those who have endured the winds and winters
And proven themselves friends
To the birds, to the creatures who make their home
Those who roam as once-forest people
Now humble movers of the earth

Do you listen?

Composed 4/25/16
Description: For Day 23 of NaPoWriMo and for today’s Daily Prompt: Whisper.

Do you listen to the whispers of the world?
They speak to you
when the wind whistles and goosebumps
prickle up and down your skin
when the dark closes in
when you feel the sin of sweet on your lips and
the churning inside that settles like sand
Do you listen?
The world is telling you
that spirits ride just behind you that
evil lurks in your corner
and God hovers in certain places when
the view seems sharper and
you smile just because
Do you listen?
It’s not being subtle
we forget we were born psychic
with good and evil within
they tell us to ignore sensation bare perception
but the whispers of the world are what tell us the truth
So listen
let it guide you

Unrelenting Presence

Composed 10/31/14
Description: Why is the weather always TERRIBLE on Halloween? As I fought my way through icy winds, sleet, and snow this evening I asked myself this question many times. Here is my best guess as to why this is likely the case.

The spirits of dead
And those who guard them in the ground
Arise from their lands and fly
Blocking out the sun
And all warmth from this world

So tangible are their haunted souls
The chill they bring fills the air
Manifesting in such icy winds
That sleet falls from the darkness high
And brings chill to body as well as mind
